Our Vision. PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

ABOUT US

The idea of PFLAG began in 1972 when a mother, watching TV, saw her son being physically attacked at a gay rights demonstration. The police did not intervene, but the mother became an activist. This grew into a national organization in 1981, and now includes hundreds of chapters across the U.S. PFLAG has become one of the most effective grassroots organizations in the United States, representing thousands of families.

The Indianapolis chapter of PFLAG first met in March of 1988. Four mothers and a few gay sons and lesbian daughters attended. The next month there were 18, and we continued to grow. We now have a mailing list of over 200 and about 30 attend monthly meetings.

While support for families and LGBT persons remains our primary goal, advocacy is becoming more important in today's world.

PFLAG works with the Indiana Youth Group to staff booths at conferences for teachers, school counselors, and social workers. We hand out packets of information to help make schools safer for LGBT youth.

Members of PFLAG are always willing to speak to various groups. We have gone to university classrooms, LGBT support groups and to interested groups at companies such as Eli Lilly, State Farm Insurance and Dow AgroScience. If your class, group or company would like to have PFLAG visitors, contact [email protected].

Speakers Bureau

Indianapolis PFLAG's Speakers Bureau is designed to educate people about the realities of lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and gay people by countering stereotypes and negative images in a non-confrontational style. Our speakers are PFLAG parents and often include gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Indy PFLAG members or friends.

Our speakers bureau has made presentations for many different organizations, including colleges and universities; businesses and corporations; nursing students; health-care practitioners;  social work, counselors and psychology students; religious organizations of various types; and others.

If you would like to inquire about inviting us to speak to your group, please e-mail us at [email protected] or call us at (317) 759-3397.
